Please reflect on the weekend and share what you have learned, connecting these things to the Six Administrator standards shared in your syllabus. Thank you!
Standard 4 - This weekend, we were introduced to a project we will be working on. This project involves a multimedia presentation. Options include a Powerpoint or a Digital Movie. Today we went through the process of making a movie. This applies to Standard 4 because it ties to families and communities. The focus will be submitting our presentation to the school board or a parents club. We also discussed a scavneger hunt that involves websites dealing with the Home/School Relationship. (Sara Dail)
Whew, what a lot of information! We learned how to create wiki's, podcasts, blogs . . . All of these apply to Standard 2 in providing for professional growth. As a principal, we need to be aware of the new technologial advances and programs our studnents may be using as well as things to enhance what our teachers are teaching. Many choices for our podcast involved promoting safety for our students during the school day; standard 3. (Linda Seusy)
I really appreciated the discussion concerning technology and the curriculum. Our district has technology and the classroom written in the technology plan but the only uses I have seen are the L.Arts teachers (not all) using computers for word processing and a few others using computers for research. No final product is produced (transforming) I feel some schools still use computers as a separate class. With the technology our students use at home (cell phones, IPods, lap tops...) the students already have a base level. Standard Two was addressed by the English teacher, the success of all students by addressing diverse needs. Until that presentation, I had not thought about the blind or deaf and the use of computers/internet. Some of the accomodations would benefit other populations also.
When the class first started yesterday, I felt like I was listening to a foreign language! I had no idea what most of the "Invisibles" were! Now, after two days of instruction, I am actually feeling pretty good about what I have learned. It was so helpful having my computer and doing the steps as you were teaching them. Reviewing our tech plans and scoring them was very helpful. I had never seen the plan and I didn't know there were NETS for us to follow. All of those things met Standards 1 & 2, which states that the administrator facilitates the development and implementation of a vision. The interactive powerpoint was fun to play around with too! Today's class was even better! Making the movie was a little difficult at times, but the end product was good. You had so much patience with us-thank you! The group project is going well already. Using the inspiration site and learning how to set up the podcast was actually easy for me-finally, something I can do!This project should meet standards 3&6.Creating Wikis was frustrating, but once I got the hang of it, wasn't so bad. After leaving class today, I felt pretty confident that I can do these projects. In fact, I can't wait to get started!
Wow what a lot of new information in a weekend. As I look back it isnt as overwhelming as it seemed at the time. It seems to me most of the weekend I can apply to standard 3. The blogs, wikis and spreadsheet are tools that can make a leader much more efficient with the retrieval, computation and delivery of information. The class will become easier as I have some time in the next few weeks to internalize the different tools and how I can apply them to make my job and future jobs easier.
For me, the weekend was overwhelming. I am not a tech person and having all the terms thrown out overwhelm me! Having the 3 weeks to play with the info will definately benefit me. I can apply Standard 3 with the weekend due to covering Excel, Wiki, Blogs, Podcast, and Movie Maker. I am thrilled to take on the challenge of learning new tech because I know it will highly benefit me in the future!
I don't know if I am doing this correct, this will be the third time I have done a comment; don't know if there is just a large time lag in postings or if I just don't get this thing. Probably the later. So given that, I will post again, For me standard 6 was addressed, when the Journalism professor (sorry can't remember his name) came in and showed us the problems the challenged individuals have in our society with reading web pages that opened my eyes; both as a member of the web community and as a potential administrator (fat chance of that happening). I am going to contact our district's tech manager and have him look at our site and run it through the "test site"; I'm sure our site will rank poorly. I am going to suggest we think about what that means to users of our pages...I'll see what results that might get.
I enjoyed the whole weekend, as I am a person who enjoys technology. Wikis and Blogs are new, as well as Movie Maker. All of the wikis, blogs podcast and digital movies were fascinating and relate to Standard 2 encompassing professional growth. I know that I am going to continue to grow from the objectives in the class, and I hope that I can walk away prepared to use these new things as well as help others. I also enjoyed the discussion on technology being classified as literacy, adapting or transforming. With our school district making the decision to eliminate the technology courses at the middle school level, I was very concerned. After our discussion I realized that we are a school district which is in the adapting state and are working towards the students integrating technology within the core curriculum. This is not necessarily a bad place to be.
In class this weekend we learned many different things like power point, digital movies, excel, and wiki's, just to name a few. This went along with standard 4.0 which places an emphasis on presenting to school boards, parents clubs, and local service clubs. We discussed the Copywright and Fair Use Guidelines for teachers. This ties into standard 5.0 which involves acting with integrity, fairness, and an ethical manner. I look forward to learning more technology tools in the next few weeks.
I agree with the others that said we covered a lot of information. I think we definitely addressed Standard 4 when Bradley Dilger showed us how blind and deaf people can use the internet. We also addressed Standard 4 by starting on a project that could be presented to a school board or community organization.
I think that with all that we learned there were three different standards that we really touched on. I thought when Bradley Dilger came in an talked about the assistive technology it touched on Standard 4 meeting the diverse needs. I never had thought about things like this and it was very eye opening.
I think the review of the copyright information meet Standard Five in making sure that what we are doing is acting in an ethical manner.
We took a look at a lot of different stuff. With the podcasts, wikis, excel, movie maker, interactive powerpoints, and of course this blog it definitely meet Standard 2 with professional growth.
We learned so much about different things that it is going to be interesting to play around with what we learned and see how much of it I remember or can manage not to mess up!! - Jayme Olson
The completion of the first was a little overwhelming but very beneficial. I have begun a movie maker with my fifth graders already and we plan to tackle excel next week. I feel that we discussed Standard #2 by the use of excel, movie maker, blogging, podcasts, etc. Mr. Dilger's presentation would cover diversity which is included in Standard #4. The copyright discussion lends itself to fairness and integrity which is mentioned in Standard #5.
This weekend was full of information that will be extremely beneficial, not only for this class, but as an administrator. The spreadsheets, blogs and wiki page can all be tools to promote a positive learning environment. These tools will also allow the administrator to communicate more effectively with his or her staff. Standard three applies to what I found interesting and useful this weekend.
My gut reaction to our first weekend is that administrators must be familiar with current technology in order to understand or respond to the cultural context of the school community (Standard 6). On the one hand, technology promotes student success. An administrator must be an advocate for technology, whether or not it is in their area of expertise. On the other hand, technology poses many problems at school, from students texting test answers to cyber bullying. Either way, an administrator has to stay on top of current trends in technology. (Personally, I do not meet this criteria at the present time - but I DID make a movie, and I am already considering doing this with my class!)

I love learning/playing with all the new technology! I think we hit on quite a few administrative standards this weekend including:
Standard 1 (Vision): Forming school improvement plans including a technology component, or in Illinois, a separate plan outlining how to improve technology use relates to a school's vision.
Standard 2 (Professional Dev.): We discussed the importance of professional development with technology integration. It seems like it is often included in theory or in budgets, but sometimes overlooked in practice.
Standard 4 (Family/Community): My multimedia presentation is going to be designed as an orientation for the parents of incoming sixth grade students. I think technology can be a very useful communication tool with families, but ensuring equal access can be tricky.
Standard 6 (Fairness/Ethics): Our discussions regarding fair use & copyright law was very useful, relevant, and informative. Brad's presentation on accessibility issues was extremely interesting and eye opening. I ran my district's web page through the checker, and we failed many aspects. I would like more info on how to bring our sight into compliance.
I learned quite a bit last weekend. I was not overly familiar with a Wiki, and the blogging environment is completely new to me.
In regards to Standard 4, I enjoyed learning new applications for Powerpoint and I also enjoyed my first formal introduction to Movie Maker. I'm fairly certain that as administrators we will be using applications such as Movie Maker and Powerpoint fairly frequently, so it's important to understand their use and application.
After completing the first weekend, I too feel much more comfortable using some of the invisible technologies that we discussed at the beginning of the session on Saturday.
The first weekend definitely seemed like a whirlwind of information, however after reflecting back on it now I seem to have a much firmer grasp of what we went over. The Excel refresher was great, as much as I felt I knew about Excel it is still nice to refresh that knowledge every now and then. Creating the movies was fun as well, and again refreshing my knowledge technology wise is always beneficial.
As far as Standards go, the technological aspects of the weekend will definitely be used in professional development and could be tied to Standard 2. We touched on Standard 5 when we went over the Copyright and Fair Use Guidelines for Teachers, it's important that we know as administrators what these copyright laws are.
All in all, it was a great weekend of learning a lot about technology...definitely technologies that I will put to use in the future.
I really enjoyed the first weekend. I also thought Standard 3 was going to be the most impacted because of this course. I have just made an m&ms excel spread sheet with my sixth grade class. I am planning attempting some podcasts (with TJ's help) later this quarter.
